Personal Information Management (PIM) refers to the application software suite that functions as a personal organizer. Paper-and-binder organizers are a common method of PIM, but are increasingly being supplanted by electronic Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) devices and PIM software. S60 smartphones increase the value of PIM by combining it seamlessly with the device’s communication features without compromising the simple and easy phonebook user experience.
The S60 contacts application (aka the Phonebook) is the main source of all contact information in the device. Besides phone numbers of different types, contact details may also include e-mail or web addresses. The Contacts application has been integrated with other S60 applications in order to allow easy initiate calling, messaging, or browsing directly from the application.
The S60 contacts application uses shared memory, meaning that there are no limitations in terms of the amount of contact entries or contact details that it can hold. Some types of fields can contain an unlimited number of sub items; for example, you can save several mobile phone numbers for one single contact entry. The application allows you to add other contact details related to the contact’s company or family. You can also personalize contacts by attaching a thumbnail image or special ringing tone to the entry.
The S60 logs application holds the device’s primary communication history and allows you to initiate calls quickly and send messages to recently used or saved numbers. You can also dial frequently used numbers by using the speed dialing and voice dialing features.
Recording, tracking, and managing appointments are easy with the S60 calendar application. You’ll also find it convenient for scheduling meetings, tasks, and events. When browsing the calendar you can choose to view by week, month, or to-do list and you can quickly check your daily plan as well. You can also set alarms to remind you of upcoming appointments or pending tasks. Scheduled upcoming events are also shown on S60 Active Idle screen.
Calendar events are stored in UTC time. The S60 clock application changes the current city information; when the time zone is changed, the events in the calendar are adjusted accordingly. The clock allows you to follow the time in other cities. With the clock you can also set specific alarms to alert you either daily, weekly, on work days, or for a one-off occasion. As an added feature, the S60 notes application is a text editor for writing short notes such as shopping lists.
With S60 PIM you can send contact cards, calendar events and notes to other compatible devices over Bluetooth, SMS/MMS, or email. Correspondingly, you can easily store received PIM objects in appropriate applications.
The S60 browser allows you to download contact cards and calendar events from web pages directly to the contacts and calendar applications. For example, you can download sales contact information from a company web page to your S60 contacts application or your favorite TV program schedule from a broadcasting company’s web pages to your S60 calendar application.
The S60 synchronization application allows you to synchronize your contacts, calendar items, and notes locally with PC PIM applications and remotely with corporate or web PIM applications.
In S60, interoperability with other devices is addressed by data format and communication protocol levels. Data interoperability is ensured by supporting de-facto standard vCard 2.1 for contact data interchange and vCalendar 1.0 for calendar data interchange. Data objects can be transferred using standard communication protocols such as OMA DS (aka SyncML) and OBEX. S60 supports standard OMA DS 1.2 technology (SyncML) for PIM data synchronization. Supported technologies are IOP tested with leading server products and other compatible devices.
